The New School in New York City, USA (2017)

We were thrilled to hold our 2017 RMLE Unconference at The New School in New York, New York. For more information about their innovative programs and modern yet funky inner city campus, see their website at: https://www.newschool.edu/

The New School itself is a perfect institutional representation of what we are trying to do with our Unconferences – breaking the mold of tradition and moving ourselves into an organic, free-flowing, creative space in which to radically upend the status quo, extend our thinking, explore new ideas, and create new knowledge together.

Given the unique capacities and institutional knowledge of our 2017 partner, which included having the Parsons School of Design as one of the colleges in The New School, we were able to encourage submissions aimed at challenging assumptions and generating knowledge in the areas of design, media, and participatory management.

We had a wonderfully diverse set of 52 participant contributors this year joining us from eight different countries across three continents representing 34 universities and three independent organizations. The countries represented by our contributors include Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

For a glimpse into the innovative and exciting QIC documents that served as the foundation for our discussions together at The New School, please see the 2017 RMLE Unconference Proceedings document attached below.

As always, our days were filled with rich and stimulating discussions about engaging new ideas. Visual representations almost draw themselves.

As with each of our Unconferences, one of the main elements of what we all experience is fun! One of the places we see that most prominently is at our annual RMLE working dinner held at the end of our full day together. This year, our New School friends welcomed us to the world-famous guacamole- and margarita-filled Rosa Mexicano. It was a night to be remembered!

A giant "thank you" to our New School colleagues and friends for hosting a truly remarkable event!
